So his quirk is weird but not unusual in the grand scheme of things.
To anyone with eyes he’s a heteromorph of the horse variety and that’d be it. In fact you can even say he got it lucky to be conventionally featured. No long face jokes can land as well if he didn’t. Besides the horse aspect, he got it all. He got the air-defying purple hair, the lidded dead fish eyes, the gigantic forehead, the tall boxy stature that screams intimidating to your average short dude in their 20s with a complex, and normal human teeth™.
His appearance alone made hiding his more “less than desirable” quirk from his peers so much easier.
After Shinsou fails to get into the Hero Course, his classmates in 1-C come together to help him win the Sports Festival for the hell of it.

Izuku is 3 when he realized his mom didn't really care about him. He was 3 when she started getting physical after his father left. When Izuku is 4 he goes for his quirk appointment, where they tell both him and his mother that he will never be able to achieve his dream because he isn't as evolved as everyone else. His mother goes into a rage and leaves him abandoned not even a full 2 weeks later. From there he learns that the world isn't black and white but instead varying shades of grey, this leads his dream to change, not much but enough to change his destiny. Izuku faces betrayal love and loss but he will always have his family along for the ride. They may not all be related by blood (along with having a few screws loose) but they are family, one built by their souls.

Shinsō Hitoshi. 15 years old. Eldest of three. Son of dead doctor and an abusive alcoholic pharmacist. Falsely rumored delinquent. Will never be accepted by anyone or anything.
As long as his younger siblings are safe and cared for, Hitoshi doesn't care about what happens to himself. Himari and Hayate are his heart and soul and he will protect them with his entire being.
They asked him to be a hero, so he will be one.
It doesn't matter if people avoid him like the plague. It doesn't matter that his mother will never accept him for who he truly is. It doesn't matter that he's slowly breaking from all of the abuse and hatred thrown towards him. He's going to be a hero for his younger siblings and he will achieve that goal, no matter what happens to him or what gets in his way.
Hitoshi never expected to truly be accepted. It throws him for a loop. What a fucking shit show.

When applying to high schools Karasuma told 3-E that the Department of Defense wanted them to apply to UA, so everyone did. Surprisingly for the dead end class of quirkless rejects, they all got into the classes they applied to.
They have a head start compared to their classmates, at least a year of playing the unwinnable game against the unkillable teacher had taught them the limits of their bodies. Then again, Karma and Nagisa were the first quirkless students in class 1-A in the entirety of UA's history, and that had a certain tone to it.
Nagisa's home life was also getting worse.
